Gingerbread Cookies (Molasses Cookies)

Recipe from my grandmother, Viola Day Spencer

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg (optional)
2/3 cup molasses
2/3 cup hot water or buttermilk
3 t. Baking soda (3 t. = 1 T.)
1 t. Baking powder
1 t. Cinnamon
1 t. Ginger
Approx. 5 cups flour

Instructions:
Cream butter and super. Combine all other ingredients. Mix soft. Chill and roll it out. Cut into whatever shape you desire. Bake at 375 degrees for 5 minutes.

Makes 4 1/2 dozen, depends on shape and size of cookie cutter.
